Below are some helpful resources I’ve used over the years to help me manage my narcolepsy better. The resources range from books, podcasts, specialized alarm clocks, top narcolepsy doctors, and on. Trust me, I know from personal experience that dealing with this disease is hard. But with the help of these items and a more regimented schedule you’ll be able to manage your energy levels better.
The Narcolepsy Network
The Narcolepsy Network is the best organization out there, in my humble opinion, that provides support and education for people with narcolepsy. In addition to that, their message board on narcolepsynetwork.org is the largest one in existence right now. Check it out to read submissions from fellow people with narcolepsy on topics like medications, employment, etc. I couldn’t recommend this organization enough.
Narcolepsy Groups On Facebook
Ever find yourself battling the alarm clock every.single.morning? Feel like that alarm clock noise was developed by Lucifer himself? Try out this clock for a change.
Among purchases around $100 or less I’ve made in the past 5 years, this was has had the biggest effect on my quality of sleep. It’s an alarm clock that has a front light that glows from a deep red to bright white to mimic the effects of a sunrise. Since using this I have never found myself in a disgruntled mood when going to turn it off, yes I still wake up tired but I no longer feel shocked and frustrated when waking up.
Upon immediately rising out of bed the first thing I do is make sure I get exposure to this lamp. Next to exercise, bright light therapy has one of the most immediate effects on my alertness.
Sleep Hygiene for Narcolepsy
How is your bedroom currently set up? Is it optimized for the best sleep possible? How heavily did you research your mattress and how well does it fit your sleeping style? My favorite mattress I’ve tried out hands down is a Casper mattress. I highly recommend checking them out or at least upgrading your mattress.
Ever heard of the nutrient magnesium? Shawn Steveson from the Model Health Show dubs it in the relaxation mineral. I use this Magnesium spray (Ease) every single night before going to sleep. If you’re not taking magnesium, in some capacity, you’re doing it wrong.
I’ve heard some people refer to this book as the “Bible of Narcolepsy”. Simply put Julie Flygare is second to none when we’re talking about N-PWN about the effects of N. I highly recommend this book to anyone who either has the disease or who has loved ones that are having a hard time understanding its effects on you.
Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success
Hands down the most informative book I’ve read on sleep. He does a great job of breaking down the processes of sleep into comprehensible bites. If I could only recommend one book on sleep it would hands-down be this one.

The Model Health Show – This podcast is produced by the same author of Sleep Smarter. It’s my favorite show in the health and fitness category. He has several episodes that focus solely on sleep.
Sleep with me – Bedtime stories to help grown-ups fall asleep like babies.
Found My Fitness– This is another overall health-related podcast produced by Dr. Rhonda Patrick. Her knowledge blows me away on a daily basis and continues to bring cutting-edge research directly to the public via her podcast.
